September 2010 Theme: Peace

Open your heart to the unlimited power of compassion and find a profound level of peace in yourself and for others.

This month we are focusing on the theme of Peace. September is International Peace month and yogis seem to be the ambassadors for peace. For most of us, peace is difficult to reach and maintain. When we are in a state of peace, everything feels natural, balanced, harmonious, even when things around us are not. Unfortunately, this inner state is fleeting at best. Peace needs to be cultivated and nurtured within.

I have asked Adam Montoya to write a few thoughts on peace because, as everyone who knows him would agree, Adam “emanates” peace. Adam teaches Tai Chi, Restorative yoga and works in the office at Desert Song. He keeps us all steady and calm just by being in his presence. His Tai Chi and Yoga practices have been a testament to his Inner Peace.

Blessings,

Mary Beth

“Peace emanates from the soul, and is the sacred inner environment in which true happiness unfolds” – Paramahansa Yogananda

During this month, we honor the experience of peace. Feeling peaceful in a constantly moving environment seems paradoxical at times. The greatest comfort I have found, is knowing that the core of my being is always peaceful. Through tai chi, yoga, and meditation I have experienced this peaceful inner essence that we all have the potential to share.

Maybe you have felt your inner peace after a particular yoga class or meditation. The mind begins to enjoy the after effects of your practice allowing you to relax into the present. You feel the breath settling and soothing you. Peace begins to flow out from you and fills the room.

This feeling is something we can take with us and apply in what ever action we are doing.
Moving meditations like tai chi are powerful ways of learning how to do this. Here is a simple way to cultivate your connection with your inner peace, and then express this peace in physical actions.

1. Allow the breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. Concentrate on the calming effect of every exhalation out of your mouth.
2. Notice how this calming effect feels in the body.
3. Keep tuned into this feeling as you perform a simple movement. If you lose the sensation of calmness, go back to your breathing.
4. See if you can perform other tasks while keeping this sensation of peace.
5. Practice often and you will begin to extend peace into your daily life.

Peace and joy,

Adam Montoya – Tai Chi Teacher
